How Do You Win at Home Organization? Think Small!

By Laurie Hayes Many people have written to me about their personal goals and one I see quite often is Get organized, specifically, Get the house in order. When I ask what obstacles are in their way, the most common response is procrastination. By the time it gets to the point of showing up on a goals list, household organization has been neglected so much that the results have culminated into a mountain so big even the bravest of us want to run in the opposite direction! Procrastination is often the by-product of fear. We may perceive something to be so big or unattainable that we become overwhelmed and immobile. Getting organized doesnt mean you have to take on that mountain in one grand leap. Just start plugging along at your own speed with small steps and look only a few feet ahead at a time. Maybe youve let things slide a little more than you wanted and youd rather have a dump truck and backhoe come in and haul everything away, but it doesnt have to be that extreme. The best way to get going is START SMALL. Little 15-30 minute jobs are a great way to start, and they might be all you need to get your organizational energy in motion. A few examples of little jobs might be: 1) Clean out your medicine cabinet. Unless youre a pharmaceutical distributor, your medicine cabinet should not take up a large portion of your home. It provides a small area to focus your time and attention on. Go through your containers and throw out all expired medications. 2) If you dont want to miss your favorite TV show, why not sort through all of your expired catalogues and magazines while youre watching? Dig them out, put them on the coffee table and sort them into two piles: expired and current. When your show is over or during commercial break, take your expired catalogues out to your recycling box and put your current ones back where they belong. 3) If the catalogues were sorted during the first half of your show, haul out your purse or wallet and start cleaning it out for the second half. You would be amazed at the out-dated business cards, receipts, expired credit cards and old phone numbers you have no need for anymore. 4) Pick a cupboard/cabinet in your kitchen or garage that is overflowing and focus on it only. Dont worry about the other ten. Pick the one you feel you can tackle now, roll up your sleeves and get in there. 5) Tell the kids they have been selected for a very important mission. There is a family in town who have little or no money and their children have absolutely no toys of their own to play with. Ask your children if they would be willing to gather toys they no longer have an interest in to give to those less fortunate. They have half an hour to make their selections and place them in a designated area so you can review their choices. This done, you can box everything up and donate it to a local charity or family(ies) in need. By taking on small tasks and enlisting the help of others, the job of organizing your home is not as daunting, and you set the wheels in motion for the other jobs that lie ahead. It is absolutely amazing how putting things in order in your home has a related effect on other areas of your life. When someone is stuck and cant move forward on a personal or professional level, experts advise them to clean out the garage or tidy up their office. Organizing and putting your physical surroundings in order creates a cleaning or clearing of your cluttered mind. The correlation between your physical and mental state is powerful. Getting the house organized isnt exciting for most people, but to create some form of reward after a task is done can be a great motivator. For example, I have two favorite television shows, one Sunday night and one Wednesday night. When I assign an uninspiring task for myself, I create a condition. If I dont have that task completed by the deadline Ive given myself, I dont allow myself to watch my show. This may seem a little harsh and childlike, but we are motivated by reward. Everything we do has a pay-off and if you know what your pay-off is and if you abide by your own conditions, you will be more apt to complete your tasks. When I sit down and watch my favorite programs, I am as happy as can be. The feeling could be likened to an eight-year old being handed a triple-decker strawberry swirl ice cream cone with sprinkles on top. Remember, the state of your surroundings has a direct connection to the state of your being. If you are feeling undecided or scattered with no clear direction, take a look at your physical environment. Get organized. Take small steps and create rewards for yourself for accomplishing each task. Enlist the help of others. By staying in action and observing the positive changes you are creating, you will elevate your energy, increase your creative forces and clear your mind for greater things. The Corset Diet

Simply wearing a corset will reduce your waistline by a couple of inches, which will in turn improve your posture, support your lower back and make your clothes look better. And this is before you have even begun to diet! Wearing a corset puts pressure on your stomach as well as your waistline. One of the reasons people lose weight when they have gastric bypass surgery is because their stomach is made smaller, so they feel full much more quickly. A corset will produce a similar effect by putting pressure on the stomach, causing us to feel full much more quickly. Food may also digest more slowly, keeping us from wanting to eat again for a longer period of time. You will need to have a well-fitted corset that is comfortable for daily wear. How to Win at Checkers

By Hubert Crowell Checkers is a game played by two persons, each with twelve pieces, on a checker-board. You can only move forward on the black squares until you reach the king row and then you can move that piece forward and backward. You must take jumps when offered, even if it means you lose two or more pieces in the process. If at all possible you want to gain the advantage by taking two for one or position your piece between two opposing pieces where your opponent has no choice but to give up one or the other. When I was twelve, my Uncle Dan Clark, lived with us for a while. He not only showed me how to be unbeaten in checkers but also how to play chess. Uncle Dan was a very interesting person, he logged virgin timber in the Tennessee mountains, managed the grounds for a large Hospital in Kentucky, repaired watches and played a lot of chess and checkers. I have gotten rusty over the years and not played much checkers, so I make mistakes now. But I will never forget the basic strategy for the start of the game of checkers. Keep a pyramid of your pieces in front of you. With this pyramid you can block your opponent from reaching the king row and may gain the advantage by swapping one piece for two. Hold on to the pyramid for as long as possible and work your plays around it. With a little practice you will be able to become the master of the game of checkers. Start out with the pieces on the sides. Move the three pieces on the left all forward one square, keeping the pyramid in tack. Try to maintain this strong defensive formation and look for the chance to swap one for two. Twenty First Century Lies � The Slaughtering of Accountability

By Michael Bresciani A boy went flying down the staircase from his room and after finding his mother busy in the kitchen he blurted out a question with great earnest and urgency. Mother he saidis it true what the preacher says at funerals about us when he says we are going from ashes to ashes and dust to dust? His mother pondered the question for a moment and repliedyes that is true son. The boy took only a few seconds to think of his mothers answer and then blurted outwell Ma you better come upstairs real quick because there is someone under my bed but Im not sure if they are coming or going. The question of our origins and our final destination has been more than a childs question to us since history began. The answers we provide ourselves are many and some of them could hardly satisfy a childs curiosity. We send multi billion dollar space craft to Mars trying to find clues about the origins of life in our solar system. We search religions and the supernatural in quest of the answer to what happens after life. More often than not we sail right by the answers that have already been provided especially if they cannot be scrutinized by our own science or human reasoning. It seems like one great open ended question that is up for grabs. Anyone can take a stab at the answer thus no answer is regarded more important than another. Since the answers are up for grabs that makes the question seem as if it isnt very important. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact it is one of the most important questions any individual may ever ask. The answer will determine more about our world than we could imagine. At this point you would expect me to identify my particular view based on where or with whom I stand. If I start by saying what the Christian view of the origin and final destination of man is you may not even bother to finish this paragraph. Who is not familiar with the biblical view of life and death? Of course there will always be those who just dont give a damn about where we came from or where we are going. It is not the argument but genuine care for people that cause the true believer not to give a damn that they dont give a damn. More often than not it would not be expressed this way but maybe it should be. God does not have a view. If God had opinions and viewpoints wed all be sunk. We would have to stumble through life like a man driving down a dark mountain pass late at night in the fog on a road with no painted lines to help guide the car. We would endlessly debate the true meaning of the ten suggestions or the beatitudes if you can handle it ideas. We could create a whole new ocean of new religions in which to sink or swim. Drowning would be normal. God has been very clear about the origin and destination of mankind. He is also makes it very clear that agnosticism, atheism and unbelief in general is a choice not the natural concomitant to the lack of humanly acquired answers about the beginnings or the outcome of life. God says he made the earth and every living creature on it and that one day he will visit it again and hold us accountable for what we have done with our planet and our lives. This is called accountability. Late in the last century two grand musings were presented to the world that have gained wide acceptance. They are of course the theory of evolution and the idea of interstellar space travel. How convenient that these two answers have come just in time to help a world spiraling out of control to have answers that trump God and handily remove all accountability to him in one sweeping new wind from the devices of the heart section of our philosophies. If we came from the lonely amoeba swimming about in the primordial ooze and evolved to our present grandiose state, then we dont have to answer to God. Conversely if we are to just fly off into space and colonize infinite planets to further the human race then we wont ever have to answer to God after life. There would be no after life but only the continuation of life elsewhere in the great somewhere in the sky (space). Whew! Sounds a lot like the gospel of secular humanity and I can almost hear someone voicing a strong amen from out there somewhere. God says He is not just telling the truth but He is the truth and that truth was also embodied in his only begotten Son. John14:6 Lies also have a source according to God. They come from Gods enemy the devil. No, not the horned red faced and pitch forked demon from the comics or folklore but the covering and brilliant intelligence the scriptures refer to as the God of this world 2Corinthians 4:4. In fact he is not just a good liar; he is the father of lies John 8:44. Sure the Devil may be the inspiration for the lies you told your mother about skipping school or the fibs you told your girlfriend about kissing Suzie behind the bleachers but dont be fooled he has much bigger fish to fry and he is a diligent cook. The garden variety lies are endless like robbing banks will make you rich and happy, pornography will excite you and help fulfill your otherwise dull life, a great political ideology will finally bring peace to the earth, etc, etc, etc. But just before the judgments of God take place and Christ returns the Devil pulls out all the stops. In order to solidify the world with one mind and one pervasive secular world view he introduces the two most dastardly lies of any generation in history. The wise of this world think that they wont let the notion of an unknowable and un-seeable God make fools of them. At the same time they are letting an un-seeable entity (Satan) make monkeys of them in the most literal sense of the word through a vehicle known as the evolutionary model. The god of this world caps off his greatest deception by providing the wildest imaginations with ideas of Klingons, Vulcans and Kardacians living together with humans in a happily ever after world of the future. Sometimes I wish I could whisk about and visit every person who just sat down in front of the TV to watch an episode of Star Trek or some nature program filled with great swelling statements about what took place four hundred million years ago. And much like the minister I heard about who approached a scoffing prison inmate after he screamed out there is no God you idiot I would say hey, did you know that you were in the Bible? The prisoner said show me where I am in the pages of the bible and I might believe in God too. The minister read to him from Psalms 53:1 The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. God has been clear that anyone who seeks Him will find Him. I think we not only know that but we know where to look for him. This idea is given credence every time someone cries out to God when in extreme danger or despair. Never has it been heard that the soldiers crouching in a foxhole encompassed and outnumbered by their enemies decided to call out to the great one cell amoeba of the past or the future brother hood of humans, Kardacians and Vulcans. If Marketing is an Expense, Then You’re Doing It Wrong

Period.” WHEN YOU THINK OF MARKETING AS AN EXPENSE You might ask, “How can you suggest that marketing is something other than an expense? Of course it’s an expense – it sure isn’t income. I write it off my taxes every year. You bet it’s an expense.” If you think of marketing only as an expense, the odds are, your marketing is nowhere near as effective as it could be. Heres an example: Company A thinks of marketing solely as an expense. When busniness gets slow, Company A cuts marketing. They tell fewer prospective customers about their products. Result: They get even less business. There is another way of thinking about marketing. When you spend money and buy stock, that’s an expense AND an investment. When you buy a rental property, that’s an expense AND an investment. (Whether they are good or poor investments is another subject.) What would happen if you thought of your business marketing as an investment? WHEN YOU TREAT MARKETING AS AN INVESTMENT Something happens when you look at marketing as an investment. You start to require that it makes money. You will begin to look for the return on investment. For example: Company B thinks marketing is an investment. Every time they spend marketing dollars, they track how much business it brings. They see what’s working, so they can do more of that. Results: They get more sales and waste less money. You may market with online advertising, newspaper ads, email newsletter ads, postcards and more. How do you know exactly which one is working? HOW TO KNOW WHAT WORKS IN MARKETING You don’t need to put in a lot of time to find out what works. Notice how other businesses track their responses. Every time you see a commercial that says “Mention this ad for a free gift,” they are tracking how well that ad works. Every coupon you see is a way for a company to track an ad. Every time someone asks, “How did you hear about us?” they are tracking what works. Online its even simpler. Use ad tracking software that will give you reports about where your sales are coming from. When your marketing is an investment instead of just another expense, you’ll hold it accountable.
